Provisional 2007 calendar announced

V8 Supercars Australia have announced a provisional calendar for the 2007 season, which will feature 14 championship rounds for the first time

Although in recent years there have been 14 events, one of these was at the Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne, and was not contested for championship points.

The Barbagallo round will be held earlier than it has been in the past, with a date in March that is just a week after the Australian Formula One Grand Prix is scheduled. This means that the V8 series will be unable to make its traditional appearance at Albert Park next year.

Hopes to hold a round around the former Olympic site at Homebush have not been successful, however a second Sydney round will still be held, with a return to Eastern Creek in June providing the extra round in the 2007 calendar.

"We are extremely disappointed that we won't have the opportunity to stage what would have been a massive event at Homebush in Sydney but that's in the past now and we will move on," said V8 Supercars Australia Chairman Tony Cochrane.

But Cochrane was positive about the calendar in general: "This calendar really gives all of the fans across Australia the chance to get behind the championship as it provides them with a race at all of the major Australia circuits."

The calendar remains provisional until approval from Australia's governing body CAMS and the world governing body, the FIA.
