Courtney takes maiden win in race 1

Jeld-Wen Motorsport's James Courtney took his maiden V8 Supercar victory in race one of the City of Ipswich 400 at Queensland Raceway

In a repeat of qualifying, Courtney edged out Mark Winterbottom for victory, the two drivers spending the race running nose-to-tail, with the final margin less than a quarter of a second.

Just over a second behind the dicing duo was Russell Ingall who continued where he left off in qualifying, with the Holden Racing Team duo of Garth Tander and Mark Skaife completing the top five.

Early in the race the leading pack contained Team Vodafone's Craig Lowndes, who moved into third at the start but fell down the order just before half-distance as engine problems hit him for the second consecutive race while running in the top five, also again failing to score points as a result of the woes.

Will Davison just held off Steven Richards who moved up from his relatively poor qualifying result, with Rick Kelly, Jamie Whincup and Lee Holdsworth completing the top ten finishers.

After moving up a place at the start, Whincup appeared set to gain another place or two after his pit stop but contact as he rejoined the race saw him drop down to ninth, finishing where he started despite the retirement of teammate Lowndes.

After starting nineteenth, Paul Morris made his way steadily up the order to finish the race in twelfth position. However, an incident on lap 33 at the final turn involving Steven Johnson may face further scrutiny after Johnson spun and lost seven places following contact with Morris.

Todd Kelly was on a similar charge after starting from the rear of the grid following a post-qualifying engine change. He was running as high as fourteenth before he slowed in the closing laps, dropping back down to 21st.
