Jamie Whincup beats FPR cars to pole for V8 Supercars race one at Symmons Plain
V8 Supercars championship leader Jamie Whincup took another pole position in qualifying for race one of this weekend's Symmons Plains event
A 51.3569-second lap with three minutes to go in qualifying took the Triple Eight Holden to the top spot, and interrupted Mark Winterbottom and Friday practice pacesetter Paul Dumbrell's pole battle, leaving the two Ford Performance Racing cars second and third.
Dumbrell will share row two with Stone Brothers Ford driver Shane van Gisbergen - a potentially fiery combination given they have been involved in a public disagreement over an incident in practice in Surfers Paradise last month.
Whincup's team-mate and title rival Craig Lowndes got up to sixth fastest late on, and will start fifth as Tony D'Alberto - who was fifth quickest - has to take a three-place grid drop for a yellow flag infringement in practice.
