Jamie Whincup takes another V8 Supercars victory in Symmons Plains race one
Jamie Whincup notched up yet another win in race one of V8 Supercars' Symmons Plains event, leading team-mate and title rival Craig Lowndes in a Triple Eight Holden one-two
Whincup was beaten off the line by Mark Winterbottom, but managed to repass the Ford Performance Racing car at Turn 6 on lap 11 of 50. He was never headed thereafter, controlling the race through a half-distance safety car period prompted by Greg Murphy's Kelly Racing Holden shedding a wheel.
FPR's Will Davison got up to second for a while by virtue of only changing two tyres at his pitstop, but the tactic did not work and he was edged back down the order.
Lowndes made it past the Ford with eight laps to go after a long battle. Then when Winterbottom went wide trying to pass his team-mate three laps later, Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander - charging up from 10th on the grid - pounced and was soon past both FPR cars to claim the final podium spot. Winterbottom, Davison and Stone Brothers' Alex Davison chased Tander to the flag.
Second-row starters Paul Dumbrell (Rod Nash/FPR) and Shane van Gisbergen (Stone Brothers) both dropped back in the race. Dumbrell was steadily elbowed down the field to an eventual 13th as he grappled with a brake issue, while van Gisbergen was fending off Lowndes and Winterbottom for third until he ran wide attacking Will Davison on lap 32 and dropped to seventh, where he would finish.
Fabian Coulthard (Walkinshaw Holden), Michael Caruso (Garry Rogers Holden) and James Courtney (HRT) completed the top 10.
