Triple Eight appeals penalty that cost Whincup/Dumbrell Bathurst win

Triple Eight Racing has decided to appeal the time penalty given to Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell that cost them the Bathurst 1000 win

Whincup took the chequered flag first but was given a 15-second penalty for his part in a collision that left Garth Tander out of the race and sent Scott McLaughlin to the pits for repairs.

The penalty promoted Will Davison and Jonathon Webb to the win with Whincup and Dumbrell relegated to 11th.

The team has now decided to appeal the penalty and this will be heard by the Supercars court of appeal. No date for this has been set yet.

Before the appeal was lodged, Whincup said: "All I can say about the incident is that we were racing.

"I went down the inside, got pretty heavily squeezed and had some contact.

"I would have redressed but the car wasn't there to redress.

"I feel like we tried hard and got the till robbed at the end of the day.

"It won't break our spirit, we'll fight back in a couple of weeks."

Dumbrell added: "We still had the car speed to win so it's a tough call and we don't agree with it.

"It's a devastating day for the team. Nothing beats Bathurst so this will take some time to get over."

Davison and Webb inherited the win despite not leading a lap of the race and their 0.143s advantage over second-placed Shane van Gisbergen and Alex Premat at the flag created the closest finish in Bathurst history.
