Yates: Newman/Haas/Lanigan deal off

The deal that was set to see a technical partnership taking place between Robert Yates Racing and Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing will not go through as planned, Yates Racing officials said

Last month, during the Nextel Cup race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Robert Yates Racing announced they would partner Newman/Haas/Lanigan, hoping to take the struggling Ford team to a better level of performance by sharing technical resources.

On Saturday, Robert Yates announced that he would retire at the end of the season and a new team called Yates Racing will be formed based on the RYR organization. However, this new team will not be pursuing the initial intention of partnering with the current Champ Car champions.

"With this announcement it's clear that the letter of intent with Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing will not proceed," said Doug Yates, CEO of Yates Racing. "We're thankful for their support and would welcome the opportunity to work with them in the future."

Yates said that despite not going ahead with the Newman/Hass/Lanigan deal, they would not be short of resources next year, as Roush Fenway Racing, the leading Ford team in NASCAR, will support them in every area.

"My first order of business is to revamp our infrastructure into one that can field race teams that can compete successfully with the pre-eminent teams in the sport." Yates added.

"I personally think the best business and competitive model in the sport to emulate for long-term success is that of Jack Roush and Roush Fenway Racing. I have gotten to know Jack and his organization very well through our joint engine company and before I undertook this commitment I asked Jack for advice.

"I am pleased to announce that Yates Racing will have full support from Roush Fenway Racing, including hardware, engineering, marketing and operational practices, by the 2008 Daytona 500."

Travis Kvapil, a Roush Fenway driver in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, will be driving the No. 88 Yates Racing Ford next year, replacing veteran Ricky Rudd who recently announced he would retire at the end of the season. David Gilliland will continue to drive the No. 38 car in 2008.
