Speed takes fourth ARCA victory
Scott Speed claimed his fourth ARCA Series win of the season last weekend in the Toyota 150 at the Nashville Superspeedway
The Red Bull-backed racer started the race from fifth and was running third in the closing stages when Justin Allgaier and Sean Caisse made contact ahead of him on a late restart while battling for the lead.
Speed profited from the incident, moving up to second, and then passed Caisse with three laps to go to grab the lead.
Another caution came out later, forcing a green-white-checkered finish where the Californian was able to pull away comfortably to win his fifth stock-car race of the season and increase his lead in the ARCA standings.
"I am in this for the experience," said Speed. "The points would be nice but at the end of the day I honestly don't think that winning the ARCA championship will make or break my career. No one but the Old Man [Frank Kimmel, nine-time champion] has won in years."
"Honestly, the 01 (Caisse) and the 16 (Allgaier) were battling so hard that I was willing to settle for third. But when the opportunity presented itself I took it. I just played out the race and waited to lead until the end. Those are the only laps you need to lead anyway."
Speed has already tested a Sprint Cup series car recently with encouraging results, and he could make his debut at NASCAR's top level before the end of the season in preparation for what would be an eventual rookie season in 2009.
