Sorenson wins Busch at Gateway
Reed Sorenson scored Chip Ganassi Racing's third NASCAR win of the year, taking victory in the Gateway 250 at Gateway International Raceway, the same track where he had last won a race two years ago
Sorenson took the lead on a restart on lap 159, overtaking Michael Waltrip Racing's David Reutimann. From then on he never looked back and categorically stayed up front all the way to the chequered flag.
"(My car) was dominant all night," said Sorenson, after ending a 60-race winless streak. "It was as good as the car I had when I won here earlier. It's been a long time since we won, and we knew we had a good shot coming in here."
"Everybody on the team was real excited about coming in here, and the car was just dominant all night. I'm just real proud of everybody. We knew we had a good car after practice; we didn't know it was going to be this good, though."
Sorenson's victory comes after a series of crashes have marred his Busch Series season. Also, just a few races ago his former crew chief went to work on Juan Pablo Montoya's car, while Brad Parrott, formerly working with the Colombian, took the leading role with the No. 41 Dodge.
"I knew Reed could do it," said Parrott, who had been crew chief for Montoya in his Mexico Busch Series win. "It took him 61 races to get back here and I promise you it won't take him 61 more before he goes back."
Pole sitter Scott Wimmer, who returned to the wheel of the No. 29 Richard Childress car, came home in second claiming yet another top-three finish. He passed David Reutimann in the closing laps after recovering from a puncture early on, having led the first 53 laps.
Points leader Carl Edwards looked a contender for victory also, and up to a point he was indeed emerging as the favorite to win at Gateway for the second year in a row. However, he had a brush with the wall, which ended his hopes of making the most out of his weekend off from the Nextel Cup schedule.
The race itself started as a very clean one, but seven caution flags came out from lap 100 until the end of the night. From the 43 starters, only 27 were able to make it to the end after a series of wrecks, which saw nearly a quarter of the distance being run under the yellow flags.
Carl Edwards still holds on to his massive lead in the standings, in fact opening the gap even more to 852 points ahead of David Reutimann, who runs now second ahead of reigning champion Kevin Harvick who did not compete this weekend.
