Qualifying: Elliott storms to pole
NASCAR Winston Cup veteran Bill Elliott turned in his best qualifying performance of the year to take pole position for Sunday's race at the Atlanta oval
Before this weekend, Elliott had not qualified higher than 23rd this season. But the Dodge Intrepid driver squeezed out rookie Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Kurt Busch and Jimmy Spencer to claim the top spot.
The times were close, but it was the more experienced driver who prevailed. "I don't know if age has anything to do with it or not," Elliott said. "It's just whether you've got your car right that particular day. Some of these young guys have a different way of approaching these race tracks. Sometimes you've got to sit back and rethink the way you drive some of these places."
Elliott won last year's season finale at Homestead from pole positition, but the last time anyone has pulled off the feat at Atlanta was 1996 when Bobby Labonte managed it.
