Las Vegas: Marlin hits Vegas jackpot

Sterling Marlin avenged the late-race jinx that saw him miss out on the spoils at the previous two rounds by taking victory in the Las Vegas 400. Marlin passed Jeremy Mayfield with 30 laps to go to take the ninth win of his 544-race career

Tony Stewart set the pace for most of the race, but he was denied victory when he emerged in sixth place after a late race yellow, brought out when Shawna Robinson brushed the wall. Mayfield, who changed just two tires in his stop, initially headed the field, but with a full set of new boots Marlin was able to drag past the no. 20 Pontiac.

Marlin's win had a touch of good fortune about it. On lap 122 he was tagged by Jerry Nadaeu on the approach to the pits. Marlin was then clocked speeding down the pitlane, but a NASCAR official was unable to make it to the Ganassi pit in time to assess a 15-second penalty and Marlin was sent on his way.

Mayfield held on to take second place, ahead of Mark Martin, rookie Ryan Newman and Stewart. Defending Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon was back in 17th, one place behind Dale Earnhardt jnr.

The result means that Marlin now heads the Winston Cup standings with 517 points. Newman is 77 points behind in second ahead of Jeff Burton, Martin and Daytona 500 winner Ward Burton.
