Qualifying: Elliott on pole
Bill Elliott produced a great late effort to take his fourth pole of the year and deny Ricky Rudd the top spot in qualifying at Pocono. The 46-year-old lapped the tri-oval at over 170mph to beat Rudd by just under a tenth of a second.
"The guys are giving me real good equipment, and they're making me look real good in my older age," joked Elliott. "We had a decent day last week [at New Hampshire], but we ended up having a few problems in the race. Regardless of what happens, I'm proud of my guys."
Starting behind Rudd in third is Super Speedway specialist Michael Waltrip, who was delighted with his performance after his damaged his car with a heavy crash in practice. .
Elliott's team-mate Jeremy Mayfield was fourth, and with John Andretti fifth, there were three Dodges in the top five.
Championship leader Sterling Marlin will start from 13th, while Rookie of the Year pacesetter Jimmie Johnson is again in the top 10 in seventh. Jeff Gordon starts from back in 28th as he bids to end his season-long win drought.
