Qualifying: Craven takes second pole
Reigning NASCAR Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon gave his best shot to steal pole position for Sunday's Darlington 400, but his lap was just a shade too slow to take the top spot
Gordon was the last driver to make his qualifying run and came within 0.03sec of knocking Ricky Craven off pole. Instead Craven will start from the front for the second time this year.
The PPI driver was delighted with the result. "The team has worked well and the field here has been covered by a blanket, so any time you get a little bit, you can get an edge on these guys," he said. "That was a tough lap. That was about as fast as I could go."
Rookie Ryan Newman held pole for much of the session, only for Craven and Gordon to push him down to the second row.
But behind him was the real hero of qualifying. Steve Park is making his comeback this weekend after suffering serious head injuries in an accident last year, and will start fourth on Sunday. A dream return would be complete if he can stay in contention during the race and pull off what would be a famous victory.
