Darlington 400: Marlin stretches lead

Sterling Marlin increased his NASCAR Winston Cup points lead by scoring a dramatic win in the Darlington 400

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver was forced to start from 39th on the grid after the team had to carry out an engine change on his Dodge Intrepid. But Marlin climbed through the field, benefited from a timely late-race yellow flag period and hit the front to score his second win of the year and the 10th of his career.

An 11-car pile-up gave Marlin his chance. It was started by Buckshot Jones who got sideways out of Turn 2 and was hit by race leader Tony Stewart. He in turn was collected by Jimmy Spencer and Ken Schrader. Stewart was airlifted to hospital complaining of pain in his lower back and leg.

Marlin said: "I was really lucky. I almost hit Tony in that wreck in Turn 2. This team has a lot of determination and this is the best team I've ever been with. I think we're ready for them this year."

Reigning champion Jeff Gordon also hit Stewart in the pile-up and was forced to pit twice. He eventually finished ninth, having led 176 laps of the race.

A dream return from serious injury looked on the cards for Steve Park early on. The Chevy driver, who sustained serious head injuries last season, led until he slid into Stacy Compton and took out pole winner Ricky Craven.
