Gibbs squad to switch to Chevrolet?
Former NASCAR Winston Cup champion team Joe Gibbs Racing are considering a switch to Chevrolet from Pontiac, despite winning Sunday's race at Atlanta
Gibbs, owner of the cars of Tony Stewart and 2000 champion Bobby Labonte, says he is frustrated with NASCAR's refusal to offer aerodynamic breaks for the six-year-old Pontiac. The team has built a Chevrolet, and plans to test it, and has indicated it would consider changing brands.
NASCAR took an example from each of their four makes for tests on Monday in the Lockheed windtunnel in Marietta. The cars taken were the Pontiac of Stewart, the Chevrolet of Dale Earnhardt Jr, the Dodge of Ward Burton and the Ford of Ricky Craven. This will be the first tunnel test by NASCAR since Speed Weeks at Daytona, and could lead to changes in time for the next race at Darlington this weekend.
Pontiac has a new model in development for 2003, but Pontiac's three teams (five cars) cannot afford simply to write off 2002 while waiting for the new car. If Gibbs switches, speculation suggests that GM could pull the plug on Pontiac in NASCAR and concentrate entirely on their Chevrolet brand.
