Mayfield replaces Franchitti for Dover
Jeremy Mayfield will replace Dario Franchitti in the Sprint Cup Series race at Dover next Sunday, while the Scot will compete in the Nationwide Series race on Saturday
As Franchitti had anticipated, following his return behind the wheel during a Sprint Cup Series test at Pocono Raceway, he will compete only in the shorter Nationwide Series event to make a more progressive comeback after his left ankle injury.
Saturday's race will be 200 miles while the Cup event will run for twice that distance and Franchitti was not sure of being ready to tackle the full length race, despite running well during Tuesday's test.
Jeremy Mayfield will thus fill in for Franchitti for the coming race at Dover, making a one-off return to the Cup series at a venue where he holds the track record.
He competed earlier this year for Haas CNC Racing in seven events before a split with the team brought his season to a halt.
Franchitti plans to make his Sprint Cup comeback next week at Pocono, where he will test again today.
