Gordon critical of Kyle Busch
Jeff Gordon has been critical of his former teammate Kyle Busch following a discussion they both had in the pits after the Coca-Cola 600 last Sunday at Lowe's Motor Speedway
Busch approached Gordon at the end of the event because he didn't like how his former teammate tried to defend his position in the closing stages of the race, which Busch finished in third, one place ahead of Gordon.
The four-times Sprint Cup Series champion says he wouldn't be surprised if Busch simply has some hard feelings against him because of how his departure from Hendrick Motorsports unfolded last year to open up space for Dale Earnhardt Jr's arrival.
"It's hard for me to figure out," Gordon said while speaking at Pocono Raceway. "I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if there was and it's understandable. You look at the situation and you know, there was going to be one person that was the odd man out and we chose him.
"So I'm sure he questions why we would choose him. We all know how talented he is and how fast he went, he won races so obviously there was a reason why he was the odd man out and I'm sure that he probably does have some bitterness towards that."
Gordon said Busch should be more appreciative of his current situation, which is far better than the one he had a year ago at Hendrick Motorsports, and not behave in the way he did last Sunday.
"He's got really kind of the sport in the palm of his hand right now," Gordon added. "And I think he's not appreciating and respecting that because he could've easily drove by me the other night and he just likes to do thing the hard way.
"And you know what? I made him have to earn it and he didn't like it. He didn't like the fact that I raced him hard and he wanted to complain about it and I wasn't in the mood to discuss that at the moment."
However, Gordon says that he is open to talk to Busch and put the issue behind both of them whenever the Gibbs driver wants to.
"I have his number, I like Kyle, he has my number, we texted and talked to one another on the phone when he was a teammate and I think the same holds true now. He can call me anytime.
"But don't come up after the race when I'm doing an interview and tap me on the shoulder and won't ask me if there's a problem."
Gordon is currently tenth in the Sprint Cup Series and has yet to win a race this season, while Busch leads the points into Sunday's race at Dover.
