Johnson changing approach in '07
Jimmie Johnson feels that he has a different mindset for 2007 after winning the NASCAR Nextel Cup title last year
The Hendrick Motorsports driver is currently sitting in fourth position in the standings, and despite winning the last two races, he believes that victories are not the team's priority at this stage of the season.
"When you come into the sport you focus on victories and top 10s," said Johnson, "and now the Chase is a big mark for teams to make.
"But after you win a championship it changes you a little bit and that's what you really focus on, and what you want to do again and again.
"Race wins are very important, but since we came into '07, in the team meetings and discussions, everything we've talked about it trying to win another championship."
Championship leader Mark Martin will skip this weekend's race at Bristol as he takes on a part-time schedule for 2007, but Johnson is not concerned with jumping to the top of the standings as early as possible.
"There's no doubt the championship is what's on our minds," said Johnson. "We've just got to stay focused on the goals and that is making the Chase.
"One we are in the chase we'll deal with the circumstances at that point."
