Jarrett hopes to get Toyota's first win
Former NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Dale Jarrett is hoping to give Toyota its first win this year, as the japanese manufacturer enters NASCAR's top division this season
Jarrett, who won the championship in 1999 for Robert Yates Racing, had raced for the team since 1995, and is switching to Michael Waltrip Racing this year to drive the No. 44 UPS Toyota Camry.
"Realistic goals, as we explain to sponsors, thinking that we could make the Chase, that would be up there pretty far," said Jarrett, a three-time Daytona 500 winner.
"Can it happen? Sure, it can. But a more realistic goal for us would be to be around that Top 15 in the points in the first year.
"But I honestly think that we can get to victory lane, and I've stated a number of times that I would like to be that driver that took Toyota there first."
Jarrett finished last season without a single win and ranked twenty-third in the championship.
At the age of 50, he says the challenge facing him with his new team and Toyota, has boosted his motivation again.
"To help [Waltrip] and then to help Toyota come into the sport was a challenge I felt like would give me that energy and that fire inside of me again to really want to help and make this something special," he said.
"If I can look back after everything is finished and say I had a big part in helping Toyota enter the Cup series and be successful, then that will be pretty rewarding. It was that type of scenario that I was looking for."
Jarrett has been one of three drivers running Toyotas this week at Daytona International Speedway, for the NASCAR Jackson Hewitt Preseason Thunder testing.
