Childress: GM cuts won't hurt pace
Sprint Cup team-owner Richard Childress is confident that the recently announced budget cuts from General Motors won't hurt his team's performance
Chevrolet teams competing in all three NASCAR national series have been affected by reductions in GM's financial and technical support, following its recent filing for bankruptcy protection.
Childress, whose team is one of four General Motors-supported outfits in the Sprint Cup, wouldn't specify the extent or nature of the budget cuts his team will face, but doesn't expect them to have a dramatic impact on his organisation.
"The cuts that General Motors has made are necessary for the conditions that they're in today," said Childress. "It's not going to affect our performance at RCR. It's not going to affect our technology.
"We may have to do other things a little differently but, when it comes to our performance and giving our sponsors their return on investment, it's not going to affect it."
Childress is optimistic that GM will recover from bankruptcy and confirmed that, despite a smaller budget, the auto maker will still remain involved in racing for the foreseeable future.
"Everybody is seeing times that we never dreamed we would see," said Childress. "With General Motors and the Chevrolet product, they are going to be in racing. We had a really great meeting with them and they've got some great plans moving forward.
"Sure, we'll have to make some adjustments, but I know what Chevrolet has as a product line coming with fuel mileage and a lot of new things that they're working on, and they're going to be a very strong company when they come out of this [bankruptcy procedure]. We'll adjust with them and be ok."
RCR currently runs outfits in the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series and provides technical support to Kevin Harvick's team in the Truck Series.
