Blaney's win, Harvick's title at Lowe's
Dave Blaney took his maiden win in a crazy finish to Friday night's Dollar General 300 at Lowe's Motor Speedway, as Kevin Harvick secured the 2006 Busch Series championship with four races still to run
Blaney took the win after a series of circumstances in the closing laps took other likely winners out of the running.
Meanwhile Harvick had fate similarly fall his way to clinch the title, his second Busch crown, by finishing the race in ninth, having looked no chance to do so before the third of the race's three red flags.
Problems with a tyre and in the pits saw Harvick run as low as 35th, Edwards' late race departure just what Harvick needed to take the title with an unassailable 775 point lead over Edwards.
The race was looking like a Carl Edwards benefit until, with just over ten laps remaining, one of the night's many cautions came out for a crash for Jamie McMurray.
Casey Mears, who had taken the lead a few laps earlier by running a different pit strategy, pitted under the caution for the fuel he needed but took no tyres and came back onto the track, somehow still leading the race.
Discussions between NASCAR and various teams eventually saw NASCAR decide to red flag the race to sort out the situation, eventually rightly returning the lead to Carl Edwards, who had dominated the race, ahead of Mears.
Lap 193 of 200 saw the race return to green flag racing, but another crash two laps later saw the caution out again. Lap 197 and it was green once more, Mears again right behind Edwards.
Mears tried to pass Edwards through turns three and four on lap 198 but got loose, spinning into Edwards as they both slammed into the wall, their races over. NASCAR red-flagged the race to clean up the track so the field could have a chance at a green-white-checker finish.
Now Dave Blaney led the race from Matt Kenseth, who had returned to the lead lap when McMurray crashed, but had to start near the back of the field thanks to a combination of restart rules which seemed to conspire against him.
Two to go and the race restarted, Blaney ahead of Kenseth. Entering turns three and four with just over a lap remaining, Blaney took the high line as Kenseth dived below, the duo exiting turn four side-by-side.
It looked like Kenseth would just breeze past but they stayed alongside each other as they took the white flag, through turns one and two, and down the back stretch for the final time. Through turn three Kenseth stayed low, but as they entered four he bobbled before spinning as he came off four.
Blaney took the win as the field scattered in the smoke from Kenseth's spin. Somehow Kenseth only fell to fourth, as Michael Waltrip and Stacey Compton snuck through to take second and third.
