Allmendinger set for GEM seat

AJ Allmendinger is in the final stages of talks that look set to earn him a full-time drive at Gillett Evernham Motorsports - which could spell the end for Elliot Sadler at the team

The American competed in five events for GEM at the end of the season and his business manager Tara Ragan was quoted on the official NASCAR site as saying that a full-time deal for 2009 was very close.

"Yes, we're in the final stages of negotiations with Gillett Evernham," said Ragan. "I think things will be sorted out within the next week. Nothing's done till it's done - knock on wood - but I think we're all eager to make that work, and I think it's safe to say we're in the fine details and the fine-tuning of that.

"I don't foresee any problems coming up, and I don't think they do, either. But is it signed, sealed and delivered? No, not quite, but hopefully it will be in the next few days."

Allmendinger's future deal with GEM almost certainly means an exit for Sadler, who signed a multi-year contract extension in May after originally joining them in 2006.
