Edwards car fails inspection

Carl Edwards' Sprint Cup Series team could be penalized following an apparent technical infringement found on his winning car in the post-race inspection at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

NASCAR officials found that the lid of the oil tank on Edwards' No. 99 Ford Fusion was not secured and thus the car failed to pass the inspection process a couple of hours after it crossed the finish line in first place.

Although Edwards will keep his win, his car will be reviewed by NASCAR officials at their Research and Development facility this week, and depending on the findings of the ruling body, the team could face strong penalties.

"We'll take the 99 back to the [Research and Development] Center [in Concord, North Carolina], take a look at it there, and if there are any actions that will be taken, we'll make that announcement as we normally do next week," said NASCAR's Managing Director for corporate communications Ramsey Poston.

Given the recent escalation of NASCAR's severity in their penalties, the situation must be a worrying one for the new Sprint Cup Series points leader.

Crew chief suspensions and points penalties have been issued recently for teams found guilty of technical rules violations in all three major national series.
