AJ Allmendinger signs up for NASCAR's 'Road to Recovery' programme

AJ Allmendinger has signed up for NASCAR's 'Road to Recovery' programme following his indefinite ban for failing a drugs test

The Penske driver was suspended from competition when he failed a test at Kentucky at the start of July, and that became an indefinite ban this week when his "B" sample test also came back positive for a prohibited substance.

NASCAR contacted Allmendinger immediately after the results of his second test were issued, explaining how he can get reinstated through it's 'Road to Recovery' programme, which is tailored for each driver it looks after.

Allmendinger's management have confirmed that he accepted the offer immediately.

Speaking on Speed TV's Race Hub programme, Allmendinger's business manager Tara Ragan said: "AJ's goal is to get back behind the wheel as quickly as possible.

"So we made the decision to exhaust every resource that we can, including those given to us by NASCAR. We didn't want to wait; we've already lost a lot of very valuable time.

"We also know that the process is there to protect drivers the most. What could it hurt? Maybe we'll all learn something, but we also want to get that done as quickly as possible."

Penske Racing president Tim Cindric backed Allmendinger's decision to work with NASCAR to make his return as swift as possible.

"You never give up hope in term's of AJ's situation," he said. "The best thing that he can do is to continue what he is doing, and work with NASCAR to understand what process and what steps he needs to take to be reinstated in the Cup garage.

"I think that's where his priority needs to be right now. We as an organisation are certainly very sympathetic to the situation that AJ's going through."

Sam Hornish will continue to deputise for Allmendinger in Penske's #22 Dodge.
