Peugeot to be cautious at Spa

Peugeot will not take any risks in its fight against Audi at next weekend's Spa 1000 kilometres, according to the manufacturer's sporting boss Olivier Quesnel

The second round of the Le Mans Series on May 9 will be the setting for the first clash of 2010 between the factory squads from Audi and Peugeot, with both teams fielding three cars each as they will at the Le Mans 24 hours in June.

However, despite the anticipation of the first fight of the season between the two, Peugeot has ruled itself out of getting involved in a heated battle for victory.

"The message for everyone at Peugeot is clear: we have no intention of taking any risks on the track in Belgium," said Quesnel. "We do not want to jeopardise our build-up [for Le Mans], and winning at all costs is not part of that programme.

"Obviously, if we do win, we will be delighted, but victory is not a major concern. Our technical team needs to arrive in Le Mans in tip-top condition and they can do without the added fatigues of having to make repairs."

Peugeot sport's technical director Bruno Famin added that the factory 908s will not be running in full Le Mans spec in Belgium.

"The three cars will run the same sprint-spec aerodynamic set-up we used at Sebring," he said. "They consequently won't be full-Le Mans specification, the principal differences being at the front, which was also the case in 2009.

"The 1000 km de Spa-Francorchamps is above all a chance for the mechanics, engineers and ourselves to work in a race situation. Our aim in Belgium will be to fine-tune one or two technical details."
