MotoGP champion Martin eyes racing return in Qatar after passing medical exam

The reigning MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin is set to return from injury and contest this month's Qatar Grand Prix after receiving a positive medical check-up.

Martin has missed the opening three weekends of the 2025 campaign due to a training injury which gave him three fractures in his left hand.

It added to an already disappointing pre-season, as the Aprilia rider had just recovered from a crash on day one of Sepang testing that caused fractures in his right hand and left foot. 

But, after months of setbacks, Martin is finally set to return on the 13 April after Tuesday's check-up by Dr. Xavier Mir and the surgical team responsible for his left hand procedure.

In a statement given to Autosport, Dr. Mir said: "The clinical and radiological examination of the scaphoid, radius and pyramidal fractures of Jorge Martín, present a good evolution that allow [him] to start a new stage in the functional recovery, to get to Qatar and see what sensations the rider has in order to be able to participate in the grand prix, always after passing in MotoGP medical control."

Martin has also been cleared by doctors to increase his training intensity, particularly in cardiovascular and cycling exercises.

He is now therefore on track to travel to Doha next week, aiming to make his Aprilia debut at the Qatar Grand Prix after joining from Pramac Ducati over the winter. However, if he deems it necessary, he may opt for a final medical check-up at the Dexeus Clinic before departing.

Upon arrival in Qatar, Martín will be required to undergo another medical evaluation at the Losail Circuit, conducted by MotoGP Medical Director Ángel Charte.

Only Charte has the authority to grant him the official clearance to contest Friday’s opening practice session, after which he will undergo further assessment.

Following the check-up, Martin shared a photo on his Instagram stories showing himself training on his bicycle in Andorra, the small Pyrenean country where he resides.
