Lorenzo: 'No limit' to expectations
Jorge Lorenzo says he goes into his home event at Jerez this weekend totally open-minded about his prospects after his surprise second place at Losail
The MotoGP world champion had been pessimistic about his chances going into the Qatar season-opener having struggled in testing, but was ecstatic to split the hitherto dominant Hondas and take second behind Casey Stoner.
Now he believes anything could happen at Jerez, where he won last year.
"I come here happy and motivated after the race in Qatar, and with no limitations in my mind," said Lorenzo. "We'll see what happens tomorrow, we'll see how the bike is working and I will try to do my best."
Lorenzo admitted that Yamaha had not yet delivered the updates he feels it needs to really get on terms with Honda - and that it could be some time before it did.
"I think at Estoril we'll have something," he said. "Maybe later, at the fifth or sixth race."
Lorenzo's world championship debut came at Jerez in 125cc in 2002, and he said returning to the track as MotoGP champion was a special feeling - but not something he would dwell on.
"I came here with no experience and saw it was very difficult," he said of his 2002 debut. "I saw my idols riding with me and I finished the race more or less in last position, but now almost 10 years later I come here as world champion and this makes me proud, but it's now another championship with different circumstances."
Last year Lorenzo famously jumped into the circuit's lake in full race kit immediately after taking victory, and said he could be open to a repeat performance if he secured another home win.
"I don't know, it depends on the crazy mind and I have - and the result, of course," he said.
