Vermeulen thankful for downpour
Dutch Grand Prix pole position man Chris Vermeulen welcomed the late downpour that marred the end of qualifying on Friday after pipping championship-leader Casey Stoner on the grid
The Rizla Suzuki rider secured his first front row start of the season in the rain at Assen and took the third pole position of the career - while further enhancing his reputation as a wet weather specialist.
And the Australian admitted that he was relieved when he saw the rain coming down harder just moments after he had moved to the top of the timesheets.
"Last year I had two poles and haven't been on the front row yet this year so I am happy," said Vermeulen.
"The conditions were difficult. There was more rain and less rain, but that wasn't the problem. The wind was affecting me a lot.
"I was building up speed and slowly getting quicker and quicker. I saw the time to beat was a 1:48.5 from Stoner. I did that, but didn't know if mine was going to be quicker than his. But then I saw my name on top of the sheet.
"Then luckily for me I saw the rain came down heavier. But I am very happy. The team did a great job.
"It was our only wet session, the bike feels strong and we have to be prepared for any condition tomorrow."
