125cc: Talmacsi wins by a whisker
Gabor Talmacsi won the 125cc Spanish Grand Prix in a thrilling finish that saw him beating Lukas Pesek by a whisker
Talmacsi led from lights to flag except for the last lap when Czech Pesek, who closely followed him from the fourth lap onwards, tried to attack Talmacsi successfully and looked set for victory.
But the Hungarian didn't give up and exited the last turn slightly faster and managed to overtake and beat Pesek by a mere 14 thousandths of a second.
"It was very hard because it was tough to keep the pace up," Talmacsi told Italia1. "Pesek copied what I was doing and waited to overtake until the last lap, but he made a mistake on the last turn. So I caught the draft and passed him."
The two were followed by Hector Faubel, who had a mostly lonely race six seconds behind the leading duo. Towards the end he was however caught by 15-year-old sensation Pol Espargaro, who finished just seven tenths behind.
The Catalan started well and went from seventh to second at the start. During the race he was overtaken by several riders and fell back to seventh place, but thanks to a great move with two laps to go he overtook both Sergio Gadea (fifth at the end) and Pablo Nieto (sixth) for fourth place, after Tomoyoshi Koyama fell from the same position on the previous lap.
It was a race to forget for Mattia Pasini. The Italian, who dominated both qualifying session this weekend, saw his engine switching off while on his way to the grid. He managed to go back to the pits and change the bike, but with the pitlane already closed he had to start last on the grid.
After a scorching first lap in which he managed to get up to tenth place, he tangled with Bradley Smith and they both fell and had to retire. The Italian put the blame squarely on the Briton's shoulders
"Smith took risks five times and almost made me fall two or three times," Pasini explained.
"He then braked very late at the end of the straight; I don't know where he wanted to go and he ruined what I was doing. He braked where he couldn't brake and took me down with him and we both fell."
Simone Corsi also fell from third position in the third lap. He later said he braked too late.
