Moto2: Lorenzo secures provisional pole
Points leader Jorge Lorenzo took a step towards his seventh pole position of the 2007 250cc season by leading first qualifying at the Sachsenring
Lorenzo fell as low as sixth as a number of riders took turns on pole early on, including Mika Kallio, Hiroshi Aoyama and Alex de Angelis.
But the reigning champion soon regained his customary dominant position and proved unbeatable in the second half of the session.
Marco Simoncelli took second - potentially his best grid position ever and Gilera's best of the season if he can retain it in Saturday qualifying. The Italian was 0.071 seconds behind Lorenzo.
De Angelis ended up third, three places clear of Lorenzo's other main title rival Andrea Dovizioso.
Hector Barbera and Mika Kallio split them in fourth and fifth.
Regular frontrunner Alvaro Bautista was only ninth after falling early in the session.
