Moto2: Pasini grabs provisional pole in Italy

Qatar Grand Prix winner Mattia Pasini took a stunning provisional pole position for for the 250cc Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, after he went nearly a second quicker than the field in damp conditions

The Italian, on his Polaris World Aprilia, stole the thunder of his countryman Marco Simoncelli on the final lap of the session, just moments after the Gilera rider had thought the pole was his.

Both home riders jumped ahead of Hector Barbera with their last attempts.

The Team Toth rider eventually took third, having enjoyed a duel with Alvaro Bautista for the top of the times earlier in the session. This ended when Bautista highsided at the first corner.

Bautista was uninjured in the fall but it rendered him helpless to respond to Pasini, Simoncelli and Barbera.

Bautista's fall in fact cost the Spaniard dear as he also slipped behind KTM rider Hiroki Aoyama.

Manuel Poggiali was sixth ahead of championship leader Mika Kallio on the second KTM.
