Q & A with Scott Dixon
Q. You clearly have a good car and you must be happy with pole position
Scott Dixon: Yeah, it's been a good month. I keep waiting for something to go wrong, but even when we've had a bad day by the end of the day the car's been pretty decent, pretty quick, and we've been able to adapt well, so it's been smooth. Uncanny smooth.
Q. Is that some sort of bad omen then?
SD: I'm just trying not to talk about how well we've been doing as I think we can jinx it pretty easy. History shows that the quick car doesn't always win, especially at this place. I don't know, I just want to get in the race - then we'll know what happens.
Q. What's the tactic - get in front and try to dictate the race?
SD: That's the other thing that's really hurt us this year, I think. If you look at Japan and at Kansas, that's what we did, try to lead laps and stay out front and fuel strategy killed us at the end.
I just hope that the luck rolls with us this month, I guess it has sort of already, but I'll probably end up being more conservative and try to save a bit of fuel and see how the car is one or two cars back. I know Dan's gonna want to lead a lot of laps...
Q. Won't the two of you work together and save some fuel?
SD: We have a team meeting later and I'm sure that's going to come up. Normally he's the one out front burning fuel and I try to stay back, and that's worked out for him just recently. There are all sorts of strategies to be honest.
Q. Does the fact the Indy 500 is probably the biggest race in the world add to the pressure?
SD: It does actually, but I'm trying not to think about it, try to approach it like it's just any other race. I think if you start thinking about it being the biggest race of the year and it all boiling down to those final two hours then you can out psyche yourself.
Q. Has the vibe changed since reunification?
SD: Big time. It's definitely picking up. The media side of it has got a lot stronger. The easiest way to put it is that at the Speedway, where we practice all day long 12-6pm, you have to get out have a toilet break occasionally.
It used to take less than 10 minutes, now it's about 45. For me that's the first sign that it's getting big again.
