Matsuura working on Motegi return

Former IndyCar Series rookie of the year Kosuke Matsuura is working on a one-off return to the championship for his home race at Motegi in September

The Japanese driver spent four seasons in the championship in the mid-2000s, initially with Fernandez Racing and then with Panther.

He lost his drive when Honda, which was keen to have a competitive Japanese driver in the series, switched its support to Indy Lights stand-out and now Andretti Green driver Hideki Mutoh instead.

Matsuura subsequently returned to Japan to race in Formula Nippon and Super GT, but is close to finding the funding to return to IndyCar for Motegi. He attended last weekend's Iowa race to negotiate with potential teams.

"I want to meet some of the teams," he said. "I'm especially interested in Dale Coyne, Luczo Dragon Racing and KV. I think I can put something together to race at Motegi."

The Japanese race traditionally attracts additional entrants to boost local interest. Fellow former series regular Roger Yasukawa - an American of Japanese descent - has already agreed to drive for Dreyer & Reinbold at the event.
