Lazier in race for Indy fitness
Jaques Lazier is facing a race against time to be fit for next month's Indianapolis 500 following his shunt with Tomas Scheckter in Sunday's Indy Racing League round at Nazareth
Lazier suffered a lower spinal fracture and concussion when Scheckter hit his Dallara as he attempted to pass at Turn 3 with just over 100 laps to go. The good news for Lazier is that he has full movement in his lower body.
"I just want the guys on the crew to know I'm going to be okay," said Lazier from hospital. "They've worked awfully hard the first part of this year and we had a great car today. It would have been nice to roll into Indy with another good result under our belt.
"As it is, we'll find out here soon about the 500, but I'm hoping there's a chance I can still be there for it, depending on what the tests show."
Both Lazier and Scheckter slammed hard into the outside wall following the collision. The South African suffered a cut to his lung and concussion. Both drivers were airlifted to hospital, and Scheckter is expected to be discharged on Tuesday.
