Fernando Alonso leads 'rookies and refreshers' Indy 500 practice

Fernando Alonso's McLaren Honda Andretti entry was fastest in the two-hour 'rookies and refreshers' test that began practice for the 2017 Indianapolis 500 on Monday

Alonso lapped the Speedway with a best average speed of 221.634mph from the 26th of his 36 laps, with Rahal Letterman Lanigan's IndyCar returnee Oriol Servia completing a Spanish one-two.

That pace from Alonso was slightly slower than the 222.548mph lap he set in his maiden IndyCar test earlier this month.

Ed Jones, IndyCar's only full-time rookie in 2017, was third fastest for Dale Coyne Racing with a 219.288mph, with veteran Jay Howard fourth in the third Schmidt Peterson Motorsports entry to complete an all-Honda lead quartet.

Debutant IndyCar team Juncos Racing saw Sebastian Saavedra clock 216.598mph in the Chevrolet-powered #17 entry, while Andretti Autosport's sixth entry, for two-time Indy Lights runner-up Jack Harvey, was sixth on 214.353mph.

Zach Veach, driving the third AJ Foyt Racing entry, made only a warm-up run before the session ended.

A four-hour practice session follows for all cars.
