Dario Franchitti frustrated with Ed Carpenter after Detroit IndyCar qualifying

Dario Franchitti hit out at owner-driver Ed Carpenter following a frustrating qualifying session for the Indianapolis 500 winner in Detroit

The Scot was eliminated in the first segment of IndyCar qualifying and ended up with the 15th-fastest time, although he will start from 14th due to a 10-place grid penalty carried over from Long Beach for fellow Ganassi driver Graham Rahal.

Franchitti's team-mate Scott Dixon secured pole, but while Franchitti admitted that he was not driving at his best, he said that his main problem was traffic.

"I'm pretty sick so I'm not doing the best job of driving," Franchitti said. "But in qualifying there were several laps that we were easily fast enough to get in [to the second segment] and we kept meeting Ed Carpenter.

"I don't know if he's on a Sunday drive or what, but he is just cruising on the line. Even on the slow laps, he's getting in the way.

"The #4 car [JR Hildebrand] and I were trying to get clear laps, and you can gap [Carpenter] a whole straight, but no more because there's about four cars behind you, and you still catch him.

"I'm very disappointed. It's very difficult to pass here, so it's going to be a tough old day tomorrow."
