Pocono IndyCar: Ryan Hunter-Reay cleared to race at Pocono
Ryan Hunter-Reay has been cleared to drive in today's IndyCar race at Pocono after his heavy crash in qualifying
The Andretti Autosport driver struck the wall at Turn 3 just as he was commencing a flying run at the Pennsylvania circuit in yesterday's session, which was topped by Takuma Sato.
An IndyCar press release stated that, following his release from hospital last night, Hunter-Reay, who had still been a doubt to compete in the race at that stage, had been re-evaluated by IndyCar's medical director.
"Andretti Autosport driver Ryan Hunter-Reay was re-evaluated by IndyCar Medical Director Dr Geoffrey Billows this morning after sustaining injuries to his left knee and hip Saturday following a crash in qualifying," read the statement.
"Hunter-Reay has been cleared to drive."
Autosport has learned that Hunter-Reay struck the wall at 139G, but cleared a CT scan check for concussion.
Following an MRI scan and Dr Billows' further examination he was given the all-clear.
Hunter-Reay's crash was the third major shunt at Pocono on Saturday and he will be joined at the back of the grid by Ed Carpenter and Helio Castroneves, who also had accidents.
Carpenter hit the wall in morning practice at the exact same spot as Hunter-Reay later would, and although he was quickly assessed and released by the IndyCar medical team, his repaired car failed to reach the technical inspection line by six minutes ahead of qualifying.
Castroneves collided with the Turn 1 wall when his car slewed out of control at the start of his flying lap in qualifying, and he too was swiftly cleared to compete by medical officials.
