Pocono Indy Lights: Andretti's Carlos Munoz back on form with pole
Carlos Munoz rebounded from his disastrous outing at Iowa Speedway two weeks ago to take pole position for this weekend's Indy Lights race at Pocono
The Andretti driver, who lost the points lead to Sage Karam after struggling to last place at Iowa, was the last driver to set a time in the single-car qualifying session and vaulted to the top with a two-lap average of 188.861mph.
"It was a really good two laps," Munoz said. "The car could go flat-out for the whole lap. But pole position is just one point and the race is 50 points, so we need to think about the race.
"We practiced a lot [in testing] yesterday, and this morning we were working on race set-up. I'm feeling pretty good.
"But it's going to be a long race, so let's see what happens. [The times] will be closer in the race for sure, because of the draft here - there's a lot of high-speed."
Karam, who had gone out at the start of the session, remained the benchmark right up to the time that Munoz appeared on track, but his 187.302mph average proved to be 1.5 mph shy of where he needed to be.
Gabby Chaves, who occupied second place for most of the session, was relegated to third by Munoz's lap, with Jack Hawksworth to start from fourth.
