Surprise pole for Ferrari at Dubai

A Ferrari 550 Maranello Evo is on pole for tomorrow's season-ending FIA GT race at Dubai - but it won't be competing for points

Larbre Competition's one-off entry - competing in the G2-category - lapped the circuit in the fastest time of 1:55.987, just 0.080 ahead of the Aston Martin DBR9 of Fabio Babini.

The BMS Scuderia Italia driver narrowly pipped his teammate Fabrizio Gollin to the front row slot, with the Corvette C6.R of Mike Hezemans the third of the GT1 qualifiers.

For Larbre, who were carrying no ballast, the session went exactly as planned.

"I'm pleased to be on pole position," said qualifier Frederic Makowiecki, "everything went perfectly."

Larbre's car is the first run in front of FIA Stewards for the new Care Racing Developments restrictor-less engine, in which power is limited electronically.

It was a surprise for the GT1 runners to see the Ferrari at the head of the field, but Babini was still pleased with his time.

"It's a good result because I chose a different solution of set-up and tyres shortly before qualifying," he explained.

Both the drivers' and teams' titles have already been won - by Vitaphone Racing and their lead duo Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini - but the runner-up slot in the drivers' championship will be settled in tomorrow's race.
