Fisi linked to Maserati

Sauber Formula 1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella has been linked with a race seat in Maserati's new MC12 sportscar alongside Mika Salo later this year

Fisichella, who was drafted into Alfa Romeo's European Touring Car Championship team for the last race of 2003, has been invited to drive in the eighth round of the FIA GT Championship at Imola on September 5, according to this week's Motorsport News, which falls a week before the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Fisichella told Italian magazine Il Resto del Carlino: "I am available and I'm very interested by the proposal."

Salo, who raced in Champ Cars last year, will get his first run in the MC12 at Monza on June 8-10, but has already tested a Ferrari 575 at Paul Ricard.

The V12-engined MC12's arrival in the series is likely to cause consternation at Imola as the mid-engined supercar seems set to be run from an in-house motorsport facility, which runs against the spirit of the series.

Fisichella had also been expected to test for Ferrari's F1 team, but the Italian continues to be frustrated in his efforts to drive for the team. Ferrari's technical director Ross Brawn explained: "Technically there just has not been an opportunity for him to run, so from the point of view of the programme we have there has not been a convenient time for him to run."
