Weekend review and results round-up

In a weekend of surprises and streaks being ended, Casey Stoner looked odds on for a fourth straight Qatar Grand Prix victory until he crashed out of the lead and allowed Valentino Rossi to lead a Yamaha one-two - but only after an unexpectedly strong challenge from Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden

There was a shock in the first ever Moto2 round too, as an illustrious field of established names was left trailing by unheralded former 250cc midfielder Shoya Tomizawa.

Will Power seemed set to continue his winning run in IndyCar at Barber Motorsports Park, until the vagaries of fuel strategy meant it was his Penske team-mate Helio Castroneves who emerged on top.

It was a losing streak that ended in NASCAR - as Ryan Newman pounced on Jeff Gordon in the dying moments at Phoenix and found himself in Victory Lane for the first time in just over two seasons.

Audi continued its habit of giving its new cars winning debuts by dominating the Paul Ricard 8 Hours with the revised R15 TDI plus. The Le Mans Series opener shared the bill with rounds one and two of the Formula 3 Euro Series, where a slender grid produced great racing and wins for Edoardo Mortara and Alexander Sims.
