Summerton tops rookie sessions
American Jonathan Summerton marked his A1GP debut by setting the pace in the rookie practice session at Eastern Creek, Australia
The Formula 3 Euroseries racer shot to the top of the times in the final minutes of the second session. Heavy drizzle created wet conditions for the two 25-minute runs, but it eventually eased off and a dry line started to emerge towards the end when Summerton set his lap.
Christian Vietros grabbed second spot for championship leaders Team Germany, 0.3 seconds behind the pacesetter. Dutch rookie Renger van der Zande was third fastest from Marcel Fassler in the Swiss car.
Frenchman Loic Duval headed the times for most of the second session, but wasn't on track at its driest and wound up fifth, just ahead of the impressive Christian Murchison, who used his circuit knowledge to run sixth for Team Singapore.
Honda F1 tester Alan van der Merwe was quickest in the wetter first session and initially set the pace in the second. But like Duval he didn't run during the driest period and set the seventh best time.
Ian Dyk had his first run for Team Australia and did a solid job to rack up the eighth best time, putting him ahead of Team GB's Oliver Jarvis who had a brief off on his way to ninth. Team Italy rounded out the top 10 with Michele Rugolo at the wheel.
