New Zealand head free practice

Jonny Reid put Team New Zealand's 'Black Beauty' A1GP car at the top of the times after a closely-fought free practice session at Eastern Creek

Despite the overcast sky there was no further rain and the track was sufficiently dry for all runners to start the hour-long session on slick tyres. Times soon tumbled and a three-way fight for the top spot went Reid's way with a lap of 1:19.223.

Loic Duval was just over a tenth back in second for Team France, while Nico Hulkenberg continued Team Germany's excellent form by going third, 0.295 seconds down on Reid.

Tomas Enge was the early pacesetter and the Czech wound up fourth narrowly ahead of Team Mexico's Salvador Duran.

Sebastien Buemi took sixth for the Swiss ahead of Alan van der Merwe (South Africa), Jeroen Bleekemolen (Holland), Richard Lyons (Ireland) and Phil Giebler (USA).

A decent late run on new tyres lifted Aussie Karl Reindler from a disastrous 20th to 12th, while Robbie Kerr and Team GB struggled for pace and finished 13th, almost 1.5 seconds off Reid's pace.
