Middleton wins Gold Star

Middleton finished second on the event in his Hyundai Accent WRC, but took maximum Gold Star points for the fifth time this season because the overall event winner, Matthew Wilson, was not registered for the championship. With drivers counting six rounds towards the championship, Middleton's five victories and one second place ensure he is now unbeatable

Having secured the crown, Middleton will probably sit out the rest of the season in order to focus his efforts on son Craig's Kumho National Championship campaign.
"The BTRDA is a fantastic championship, and the friendly atmosphere allows you to get on with the simple enjoyment of doing the events," said Middleton. "But the car needs to be prepared for Craig's efforts. Well, he'll be preparing it, and I'll probably have to foot all the bills."

Middleton succeeded in clinching the championship in record time, eclipsing the mark laid down by Andy Burton last season. Series organiser Howard Wilcock revealed: "With the exception of last season, when Andy Burton won the title at the Plains Rally, the last few seasons have seen the title race go to the last round at the Cambrian Rally. This year, Graham has been so consistent in the face of some very strong competition. He certainly deserves the win."

Wilson's victory on last weekend's event marked the WRC hopeful's first major rally triumph. Middleton was quick to praise the 17-year-old driver and son of Ford WRC boss Malcolm Wilson.

"He's been a real pain in the backside," said Middleton. "I drove as hard as possible on the rally, and I still couldn't beat him."
