Barde's sixth Ferrari win
Unstoppable Frenchman Ange Barde seized his sixth victory of the season and a 45-point series lead in the fourth round of the European Ferrari Challenge championship at Misano on Sunday. If the bookies have taken any bets on Barde winning a third 360 Challenge title in 2004, they might as well pay out now
Paddy Shovlin ensured that Barde didn't have it all his own way in the first race. The talented Irishman made a near-perfect start from second on the grid and held his outside line around the long right-hand Misano corner before snatching the lead from polesitter Barde at the next turn. Former FIA GT driver Robert Pergl passed Barde a few corners later, dropping the championship leader to third.
Pergl quickly overcame Shovlin but could not shake off his rivals and was repassed by the Irishman after only four laps at the front. Shovlin, in turn, scarcely led a full lap before double champion Barde retook the lead - this time for good. A missed gear on lap 11 saw Shovlin lose second place to Pergl, who pressed Barde all the way to the flag, finishing only seven tenths of a second behind.
Barde looked to have a fight on his hands in the early stages of the second race as a quartet of Barde, Shovlin, Pergl and Michael Cullen repeatedly exchanged positions. But a series of errors by Pergl dropped him out of contention, whilst intra-team fighting between Shovlin and an off-colour Cullen allowed Barde to streak away. Shovlin resisted Cullen's advances to claim his second trophy of the weekend, with Cullen rounding out the podium.
In class two, Italian guest driver Marco Coldani spoiled the regular frontrunners' party by taking two wins. He pipped championship leader Oliver Morley to pole by 0.08 seconds before easing to victory 7.8 seconds ahead of the Englishman. Gearbox problems denied Morley the chance to start the second race, thus removing Coldani's main challenger. Austrian Norbert Walchhofer led Coldani in the early stages of race two but was unable to keep him behind.
