Michel sets up GP2 F1 'feeder' series
Renault asserted yesterday that, contrary to an FIA statement on Monday describing Europe's new-for-2005 GP2 one-make single-seater series as "one of several Renault promotional formulae" [Jan 19], its role would be as its engine supplier, not as its organiser. We understand that the new series is being established in Geneva, Switzerland, by Bruno Michel, an associate of Renault F1 chief Flavio Briatore
Renault stated: "Following yesterday's press release regarding the GP2 Series, Renault would like to clarify that they are not the organisers of the series. Renault's involvement in GP2 is supporting the series by supplying engines. Renault are quite confident that GP2 will become the stepping stone for drivers in F1."
A former F1 executive with the Ligier team and engine supplier Supertec, Michel now manages FB Associates, Briatore's race driver management business, and is also the organiser of the Renault Driver Development programme for the French manufacturer.
He stated: "Our car is going to be as close as possible to F1 in terms of its engine, chassis and tyres. This new series will be the last step before F1, and costs will be kept low to make it successful."
The FIA has thus far made no statement with regard to the future of its F3000 category beyond 2004.
