McNish happy to leave street courses

Allan McNish is looking forward to being able to compete for overall victories again now that the ALMS returns to racing on permanent road courses

The past three events were all on street circuits, where the LMP1 Audi R10 was at a disadvantage to the lighter LMP2 machines, which meant that McNish and Dindo Capello had to settle for class honours in two of the three events.

The next race on the schedule is at Miller Motorsports Park on May 19, and the reigning champion believes that his team can now focus on taking overall victories again.

"I'm looking forward to returning to a real racing circuit as opposed to the three temporary street tracks we've had in quick succession," said McNish, who took a surprise victory with Capello in St Petersburg.

"Dindo and I go into every race to win outright, and that will not change for the remainder of the season."

There is only one more street race to come in the ALMS this season, when the championship joins the IndyCar Series in Detroit.

But while the road courses should enable the diesel-powered Audis to run at the front again, McNish is still expecting a tough challenge from the lead LMP2 cars.

"Our bigger, heavier car will not be at such a disadvantage compared to the lighter, more agile LMP2 cars now," he added.

"But we cannot forget that Acura has qualified on pole for the past two races, and Porsche have gone on to win those races.

"An LMP2 car has set the fastest race lap in three of the four races this season, so they will be a danger to us in terms of overall race honours."
