Junqueira to race for Brazil

Bruno Junqueira will be drafted in to improve Team Brazil's A1GP fortunes in South Africa this weekend

The Champ Car race winner has been called upon due to his street circuit racing experience that he has gained racing in America in recent years.

Brazil have struggled in the second season of A1GP, and team boss Emerson Fittipaldi is hoping that the 30-year-old can help move the team towards the front.

"Bruno's track record is incredible so I think he is going to be a new strength for Team Brazil," he said.

"I am very happy that we have signed Bruno to race in Durban and I'm optimistic about the weekend."

Junqueira admitted that he had shown an interest in driving for the team the past, and he is happy to finally get a chance in the series.

"I originally spoke to the team at the start of this season, so now I'm very happy to be joining the team and the series," he said.

"I race on a lot of street tracks in the US so I am used to the kind of challenge that we will face in Durban, and I'm sure I will be very comfortable this year."

Fittipaldi added that the signing of Junqueira for the next event does not reflect poorly on the drivers that have represented the team during this season, where they have scored just five points and sit 16th in the standings.

"I am happy with Tuka (Rocha) and Raphael (Matos)," he said. "But I think now we need someone experienced on this kind of circuit to see how we can run."
