Jani takes sprint and feature pole
Team Switzerland's Neel Jani took a superb double pole position in this afternoon's A1GP qualifying sessions at Sepang
Jani's superiority around Sepang became even more evident in qualifying. He had an answer for everyone in the sprint race sessions, taking the pole by a couple of tenths. But it was his feature race qualifying lap that will have really demoralized his rivals.
His lap from the first part of feature qualifying was enough for pole, but Jani put in a killer late lap in the second session - effectively just for fun. It was about a second faster than Oliver Jarvis in the Team Great Britain car.
"The car was perfect," said Jani. "We kept improving it, but even for me the last lap was a surprise! I was trying to take it easy, so maybe that's the secret to going faster!"
Team France's Loic Duval was best of the rest in qualifying for the sprint race, with Jarvis third despite a mistake in the first part of the session causing him to take a conservative approach in the second. Both admitted that they could never have come close to matching Jani's final lap time in feature qualifying.
Team Germany rookie Michael Ammermuller continued his good work this weekend by taking fourth for the sprint and third for the feature. And Canadian rookie Robert Wickens also impressed, qualifying fifth for the sprint.
Home team Malaysia's struggle went on, with Alex Yoong pronouncing himself clueless as to where the lack of pace was coming from.
