Gene flies in second Monza practice
Barcelona 1000kms winner Marc Gene demonstrated Peugeot's apparent advantage in the LMS during the second free practice session for Sunday's race at Monza, lapping the Milanese circuit more than one and a half seconds quicker than the fastest Audi
Gene and teammate Nicolas Minassian moved to the top of the times in the second session, lowering the mark to 1:33.113, which was more than half second faster than even their own teammate's Stephane Sarrazin and Pedro Lamy could manage.
For once it was the Alexandre Premat/Mike Rockenfeller R10 that was the quicker of the two German diesels, the Frenchman lapping 0.2 seconds faster than Allan McNish in the sister car.
Once again the Charouz Systems Lola Aston Martin Coupe was the fastest petrol-engined LMP1 with Jan Charouz at the wheel, while the ORECA Courages of Nicolas Lapierre and Stephane Ortelli were both quicker than the fastest Pescarolo of Jean-Christophe Boullion.
In LMP2, Peter van Merksteijn ensured that his Porsches Spyder RS remained at the top of the pile.
Splitting the Porsches in second place however, was the Speedy Racing Lola Coupe driven by Andrea Belicchi. Casper Elgaard was third quickest in the Team Essex Porsche.
It was close at the top of GT1 with the Team Modena Aston Martin coming under stiff pressure from Patrice Manopoulos in one of Luc Alphand's Corvettes.
Alex Davison was once again quickest in GT2 with his Felbermayr Porsche.
