FIA launches anti-doping campaign

Karting's world governing body launched a doping prevention campaign on Friday aimed at youngsters starting out on the first rung of the motor sport ladder

"Motor Sport has always been considered to be clear of doping problems," the FIA's International Karting Commission said in a statement on the governing body's Web site.

"But the idea behind the new campaign is to increase the awareness of inadvertent doping, and promote its prevention."

It said the campaign would be run in partnership with the FIA Institute, run by Formula One's governing body the International Automobile Federation, and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

"The effort has already broken new ground as it is the first time that a major stand-alone anti-doping promotion has targeted motor sport," it said.

"I can only support the engagement of the CIK-FIA to fight for a clean sport," said Formula One's seven times world champion Michael Schumacher, whose father owns a kart track in his home town of Kerpen, in the statement.

"For the first time, an effort like this is taken within international karting and even within the frame of any FIA championship, and I think it is worth it," added the Ferrari driver, who competes in the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday.

Formula One has never had a positive dope test but some drivers feel more should be done within that sport to ensure it stays clean.
